Collecting Data: In the Garden
Overview:
A data collection and interpretation activity where students observe a garden scene, record the number of each type of insect in a table, and answer questions based on the data. Designed for students in year 1 and year 2.
Learning Objectives:
- Collect and organise data using tally marks.
- Interpret data to answer specific questions.
- Compare and analyse data sets to identify trends and differences.
- Calculate totals and differences to draw conclusions from the data.
How the Activity Works:
Students observe a garden scene with various insects, such as grasshoppers, butterflies, ladybugs, and bees. They record the number of each insect in a table. After organising the data, they answer questions to identify the most and least common insects, calculate the total number of insects, and determine how many more butterflies there are than ladybugs. This activity provides a practical and engaging way for students to practise data collection, organisation, and analysis skills while learning about insects and nature.
