Partitioning Decimals: Shade In

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

This activity helps students write decimals and shade visual models to match. Designed for students in the upper years.

Learning Objectives:

  • Partition decimals into tenths and hundredths.
  • Represent decimals visually by shading models.
  • Develop an understanding of decimal place value and representation.

How the Activity Works:

Students are provided with partitioned decimal examples, such as "5 tenths + 7 hundredths = 57 hundredths." They shade the appropriate fraction of each model: one model for 5 tenths, one for 7 hundredths, and one for 57 hundredths. Underneath each visual model, students write the corresponding decimal forms (e.g., 0.5 for 5 tenths and 0.07 for 7 hundredths). This activity helps reinforce the connection between decimal notation and visual representation, aiding in the development of decimal place value understanding.
