Multiplication as ‘Groups of’ (1)
Overview:
A worksheet designed to help students link the concept of 'groups of' to the multiplication symbol. Students interpret visual models showing objects in groups, complete the sentence format, and write the corresponding multiplication equation. Designed for students in years 2 and 3.
Learning Objectives:
- Interpret multiplication scenarios represented by objects in groups.
- Practise writing multiplication equations based on visual models.
- Strengthen understanding of multiplication as repeated groups.
How the Activity Works:
Students are presented with visual models that show objects arranged in groups. They use the models and show how many objects are in each group, and how many objects there are in total. Students then write the corresponding multiplication equation. For example, if the visual shows 4 groups of 3 apples, students would fill in the sentence as "4 groups of 3 = 12" and write the equation 4x3 = 12. This activity reinforces the concept of multiplication as repeated addition or groups of objects, helping students connect visual representations to multiplication equations.
