Chance Match Up (Middle)
Overview:
A probability activity designed for students in years 3 and 4, where they match probability statements (impossible, unlikely, even chance, likely, and certain) to pictures of marbles in jars, helping to reinforce their understanding of different likelihoods.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify and match probability statements to visual representations of events.
- Understand and use probability terms such as impossible, unlikely, even chance, likely, and certain.
- Develop reasoning skills by justifying the likelihood of events based on visual data.
How the Activity Works:
Students are given picture cards showing jars filled with marbles of various colours. Along with these pictures, they are provided with a set of probability statements: "Impossible," "Unlikely," "Even chance," "Likely," and "Certain." They will cut out the statements and match them to the pictures based on the likelihood of the event happening. For example, if a jar contains only blue marbles, the statement "Picking out a blue marble is certain" would be matched. If the jar has a mix of blue, red, and green marbles, the statement "Picking out a blue marble is likely" might be used.
