Layers of the Rainforest Worksheets for Primary Students

What are the layers of the rainforest?

Rainforests are made up of four distinct layers. Each layer has different conditions, including the amount of sunlight it receives, and supports different plants and animals.

Forest floor: The lowest and darkest layer. It receives very little sunlight and is home to insects, frogs, snakes and larger animals such as jaguars.
Understory: Found above the forest floor, this layer contains shrubs, bushes and young trees. It is still quite dark because the canopy blocks much of the sunlight.
Canopy: A dense layer of branches and leaves that acts like a roof over the rainforest. It is home to more life than any other layer, including monkeys, birds, sloths and lizards.
Emergent layer: The highest layer, where the tallest trees rise above the canopy. These trees receive the most sunlight and are exposed to strong winds. Eagles, hawks and other birds may be found here.
