Adding Fractions: Pizzas
EASYTEACHING.NET
Overview:
A fraction activity where students add like fractions of eaten pizza to determine the total amount consumed. Designed for year 3 and 4 students.
Learning Objectives:
- Add fractions with the same denominators accurately.
- Represent fractions visually to reinforce understanding.
- Develop fraction addition skills through relatable scenarios.
How the Activity Works:
Students are presented with pizza diagrams divided into equal parts (e.g., halves, thirds, quarters). Each scenario describes how much pizza each character ate. Students add the fractions and record the total. For example, if Scott ate 1/4 and Rick ate 2/4, students add 1/4 + 2/4 to get 3/4. This activity provides a practical and engaging way for students to practise adding fractions with the same denominators.
