Adding & Subtracting Fractions: Pizzas
EASYTEACHING.NET
Overview:
Colour the pizzas to represent eaten fractions and calculate how much pizza is left. Designed for students in year 4 and year 5.
Learning Objectives:
- Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.
- Apply fraction subtraction in real-life contexts.
- Visualise and solve fraction problems using visual models.
How the Activity Works:
Students are provided with pizza models, where different fractions are shaded to represent how much has been eaten. They are given a scenario, such as "Greg ate 1/4 and Sam ate 2/4." Using this, they colour the appropriate sections of the pizza to represent the eaten fractions. Afterward, they subtract the eaten fractions from the whole to determine how much pizza remains. Students can then write the remaining fraction in its simplest form.
