Adding Unlike Fractions: Pizzas
EASYTEACHING.NET
Overview:
A fraction activity where students add unlike fractions of eaten pizza and use colouring to visualise the process. Designed for students in year 4 and year 5.
Learning Objectives:
- Add fractions with different denominators using visual aids.
- Understand and apply equivalent fractions to solve addition problems.
- Develop confidence in fraction addition through relatable scenarios.
How the Activity Works:
Students are presented with pizza diagrams divided into various fractions (e.g., halves, quarters, eighths). Each scenario describes how much pizza each character ate. Students colour the corresponding slices and add the fractions. For example, if Karl ate 2/8 and Tim ate 1/4, students convert 1/4 to 2/8, add 2/8 + 2/8, and record the total as 4/8 or 1/2. This visual approach helps students better understand fraction equivalence and addition.
