Adding to One Whole

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

A fraction activity where students add fractions to make one whole using shaded visual models. Designed for year 3 and 4 students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify fractions of a whole using visual models.
  • Add fractions to complete one whole.
  • Develop an understanding of part-whole relationships in fractions.

How the Activity Works:

Students are presented with shaded visual models of various fractions (e.g., halves, thirds, quarters). They identify the fraction that is shaded and the fraction that remains unshaded. Students write an equation to show how the two fractions add to make one whole. For example, if one-third is shaded, students recognise that the remaining two-thirds complete the whole and record the equation as "1/3 + 2/3 = 1." This hands-on activity helps students visualise and practise adding fractions to make one whole.
