Shading Equivalent Fractions

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

Students work out equivalent fractions by shading fraction models, helping them visualise and identify equivalent relationships between fractions. Designed for middle years students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and represent equivalent fractions.
  • Develop an understanding of part-whole relationships through visual models.
  • Strengthen fraction comparison skills using visual aids.

How the Activity Works:

Students are presented with various fraction models (e.g., circles and bars) that represent different fractions. They shade the models to demonstrate equivalent fractions (e.g., shading 2 eighths and then determining the equivalent fraction in quarters). This hands-on activity helps reinforce the concept of equivalence and allows students to practise identifying and comparing fractions visually.
