Equivalent or Not?

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

Students identify whether fraction pairs are equivalent or not equivalent, using shaded fraction models to help visualise the comparisons. Designed for year 3 and 4 students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Determine whether two fractions are equivalent or not equivalent.
  • Practise using the equal to (=) and not equal to (≠) symbols.
  • Use visual models to support understanding of equivalent fractions.

How the Activity Works:

Students are presented with pairs of fractions and corresponding fraction models. They shade the models to represent each fraction and compare them to determine whether the fractions are equivalent. They then write the appropriate symbol (equal to or not equal to) between the fractions to complete each equation.
