Collecting Data: In the Street

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

A data collection and interpretation activity where students observe a street scene, record the number of each type of vehicle using tally marks, and answer questions based on the data. Designed for students in year1 and 2.

Learning Objectives:

  • Collect and organise data using tally marks.
  • Interpret data to answer specific questions.
  • Compare data sets to identify trends and differences.
  • Calculate totals and differences to draw conclusions.

How the Activity Works:

Students observe a picture of a busy street with various vehicles, such as cars, trucks, buses, and motorbikes. They record the number of each vehicle in a table using tally marks. After recording the data, they answer questions such as determining the total number of vehicles, identifying the most and least common vehicles, and calculating how many more trucks there are than buses. This activity provides a practical and engaging way for students to practise data collection, organisation, and analysis skills.
