Intro to Adding Like Fractions

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

An introductory activity where students use colours to visualise and add like fractions, shading fraction models to match given equations. Designed for year 3 and 4 students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Add proper fractions with the same denominators.
  • Use visual aids to represent fraction addition.
  • Build foundational fraction addition skills.

How the Activity Works:

Students are presented with fraction models divided into equal parts (e.g., sixths, eighths, quarters) and fraction addition equations. They shade the first fraction in one colour and the second fraction in another colour to represent both fractions clearly. For example, for "4/6 + 1/6," students colour 4 sixths in one colour and 1 sixth in another, then add the shaded sections to get 5/6. This visual approach helps students reinforce their understanding of fraction addition.
