Pizza Eating Monsters
Overview:
A fraction activity where students colour to show how much of a pizza each monster has eaten and record the fraction of pizza left. Designed for students in year 3 and year 4.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify and represent fractions of a whole using visual models.
- Record fractions eaten and remaining in proper fraction form.
- Develop understanding of part-whole relationships through fun, relatable contexts.
How the Activity Works:
Students are presented with a series of pizza diagrams, each divided into equal parts (e.g., halves, thirds, quarters). Each monster is described as eating a specific number of slices. Students colour the slices to show the fraction eaten and write the fraction of pizza consumed and the fraction left. For example, if Rex ate 2 out of 4 slices of a pizza divided into quarters, students record "Rex ate 2/4 of the pizza" and "1/2 is left." This activity provides a practical and engaging way for students to visualise and practise fraction concepts.
