Estimating Weights (1)

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

Students estimate the weight of various objects and select the most appropriate unit of measurement (kilograms or grams) to describe each weight. This activity promotes estimation skills and reinforces the concept of appropriate units for different objects. Designed for middle and upper primary students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Estimate the weight of everyday objects.
  • Select the correct unit of measurement (kilograms or grams) based on the weight of each object.
  • Strengthen critical thinking and estimation skills in a practical context.

How the Activity Works:

Students are given a list of objects, such as a sandwich, chair, and cabinet, and asked to estimate their weight. They are then prompted to circle the best unit of measurement (e.g., 1kg, 10kg, 100kg) to describe the weight of each item. For example, students might estimate the weight of a chair as 10kg and circle that option. This activity helps students practise estimation in real-world contexts while reinforcing their understanding of metric measurements.
