Design a Paddock: Rich Task
Overview:
In this rich task, students help Farmer Robyn design a paddock. Designed for middle and upper primary students.
Learning Objectives:
- Apply the concepts of area and perimeter to a real-world design problem.
- Use the Length x Width formula to calculate area and the perimeter formula to determine the fencing cost.
- Develop problem-solving and reasoning skills in a practical context.
How the Activity Works:
Farmer Robyn needs help designing a paddock with an area of 48 square metres. Students are tasked with designing the shape of the paddock, ensuring that the area matches her requirements. After designing the paddock, students will calculate the perimeter to determine how much fencing is needed. Students then calculate the total cost of the fence. Students record their thinking throughout the process, including any assumptions or decisions made. This activity helps students connect area and perimeter calculations to real-world applications, while also encouraging creative thinking and practical problem-solving.
