EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

Students read a house plan and calculate the area by counting grid squares, where some parts of the grid are not shown. They will answer questions about the area of different sections, such as the house, pond, and gardens, using the visible portions of the grid. Designed for upper primary students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Calculate the area of various sections of a house plan by counting visible grid squares.
  • Understand how to estimate and infer area for sections with missing grid parts.
  • Apply critical thinking and estimation skills to solve area-related problems.

How the Activity Works:

Students are given a house plan with some sections of the grid hidden. They will calculate the area of different sections by counting the visible grid squares and using estimation for the missing parts. Questions will ask them to determine the area of the house, pond, and gardens, and students will need to apply their counting and estimation skills to complete the activity. This more challenging version helps students practise not only counting grid squares but also using inference and estimation in real-life contexts.
