Calculate Area: Count (Irregular)

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

Students calculate the area of irregular shapes by counting the number of squares within the shape. Designed for students in year 4.

Learning Objectives:

  • Calculate the area of irregular shapes by counting grid squares.
  • Develop an understanding of area measurement for complex shapes.
  • Strengthen skills in estimating and counting squares to determine area for non-regular shapes.

How the Activity Works:

Students are provided with irregular shapes on a grid. They calculate the area by counting the number of complete grid squares that fall within the boundary of each irregular shape. This activity encourages students to apply counting techniques to determine the area of shapes that don't fit the simple formula of regular shapes. By using grid squares as a reference, students can more easily visualise how to measure area for more complex shapes and develop their problem-solving skills.
