Adding & Subtracting Unlike Fractions: Pizzas
EASYTEACHING.NET
Overview:
Colour the pizzas to represent eaten fractions and calculate how much pizza is left when the fractions have different denominators. Designed for year 4 and 5 students.
Learning Objectives:
- Add and subtract fractions with different denominators.
- Simplify fractions when combining different fraction sizes.
- Solve real-life problems involving fractions and visual models.
How the Activity Works:
Students are given pizza models with fractions representing how much has been eaten (such as 2/8 and 1/4). They colour in the appropriate sections of the pizza to show the eaten portions. Then students calculate how much pizza is left by first finding a common denominator for the fractions (if needed), adding or subtracting the fractions, and simplifying the result. Students write the remaining fraction in its simplest form.
