Overview:

Students calculate the area of regular shapes by counting the number of squares within the shape. Designed for students in years 3 and 4.

Learning Objectives:

Calculate the area of regular shapes by counting grid squares.

How the Activity Works:

Students are provided with regular shapes on a grid. They calculate the area by counting the number of complete grid squares that fall within the boundary of each shape. This activity allows students to visualise the concept of area and apply counting techniques to determine it. By using grid squares as a reference, students can easily relate the abstract concept of area to concrete, measurable units.
