Area & Perimeter (Irregular Shapes w/Support)

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

This worksheet helps students calculate the perimeter and area of irregular shapes using guide lines to support visualisation. Designed for students in year 5 and year 6.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and break down irregular shapes into regular shapes.
  • Calculate the area of each section and find the total area.
  • Determine the perimeter by adding the side lengths of the shape.
  • Develop spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills in geometry.

How the Activity Works:

Students are presented with a series of irregular shapes, each overlaid with guide lines to help them recognise the regular shapes within. They first determine the area of each smaller shape and then sum the values to find the total area. To calculate the perimeter, students add the lengths of all outer edges. This structured approach supports students in developing confidence with more complex area and perimeter calculations.
