Reading Scales: Weigh Station (1)

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

Students read analogue scales and answer questions about weight, comparing different objects and calculating differences. Scales are marked in 100g increments. Designed for year 4 and 5 students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Accurately read weights from analogue scales.
  • Compare and order weights of different objects.
  • Identify approximate weights based on benchmark values (e.g., half a kilogram).

How the Activity Works:

Students observe a series of scales displaying different weights and answer related questions, such as How much does the knife weigh? Which item is the lightest? Which item weighs closest to half a kilogram? This activity strengthens students’ ability to interpret scales, compare weights, and apply mathematical reasoning to real-world measurement problems.
