Perimeter: Introduction to Formula
EASYTEACHING.NET
Overview:
Students calculate the perimeter of various shapes using the perimeter formula and by counting squares. Designed for students in year 3 and year 4.
Learning Objectives:
- Apply the perimeter formula for rectangles to find the perimeter of shapes.
- Count squares to help determine the perimeter of irregular shapes.
- Develop a deeper understanding of how perimeter is measured.
How the Activity Works:
Students are introduced to the formula for calculating the perimeter of a rectangle: Perimeter = Side + Side + Side + Side. They will then apply this formula to calculate the perimeter of given shapes. Additionally, students will count the number of squares along the edges of irregular shapes to help find the perimeter. This activity helps students practise using the perimeter formula and visualising the measurement of different shapes.
